Dessi Niko
Writer and filmmaker
Winner of numerous literary and short film awards
Dessi Nikko is an Eastern European award-winning novelist and filmmaker. Born in Bulgaria just before the fall of socialism, she was raised in a highly problematic transition society to eventually become a true cosmopolitan rebel girl. Dessi is interested in all art quirky, urban, audacious. She won her bachelor’s degree in Public Relations with a ‘Graffiti and PR’ thesis, and her master’s in Film Directing – with ‘His Cannibal Granny’, a short film that tackles the topic of school bullying and raised a big controversy in Bulgaria. As soon as she learned how to write, Dessi knew she was to become a writer.
Meanwhile, she worked as a lifeguard, an English teacher, a lifestyle magazine editor and a waitress. In this order. All this was a good psychological training for her craft. Always based on her own experience and encounters, Dessi’s narrative is so honest and true that concerned readers of her debut novel ‘Alice on a Friday Night’ are known to have googled the author to check if she was doing OK. The hell she is!
